AEL61173 – FAA-PMA Oil Pressure Filter Housing Gasket for Lycoming Engines

Available now on the Airparts.aero Marketplace.

Overview

The AEL61173 is a high-performance, FAA-PMA approved gasket engineered to provide a robust, leak-proof seal for the oil pressure screen housing or suction screen cap on a vast range of Lycoming aircraft engines. This is a critical sealing component designed to withstand the high pressures and temperatures of the engine's lubrication system. Fabricated from a specialized rubber-fiber composite material, the AEL61173 ensures that pressurized engine oil is contained, preventing external leaks at the screen housing, which is a common maintenance access point. This gasket is a direct replacement for Lycoming OEM part numbers 77412 and LW-13385.

Key Features

  • Advanced Composite Material: Manufactured from a high-grade, rubber-fiber composite material. This formulation is specifically designed to be impervious to hot engine lubricating oils and provides excellent resistance to "creep" (deformation under sustained pressure and temperature), ensuring a long-lasting, reliable seal.
  • Positive High-Pressure Seal: Engineered to compress to a precise degree when the housing is torqued, conforming to any minor irregularities on the machined surfaces of the accessory case and the screen housing to create a positive, leak-proof seal for the pressurized lubrication system.
  • Single-Use Integrity: Designed as a mandatory single-use component. Once compressed during installation, the gasket takes a permanent "set" and will not provide a reliable seal if reused. Replacing it at every service ensures the integrity of the joint.
  • Broad Engine Compatibility: Serves as a direct FAA-PMA replacement for the OEM gasket on hundreds of thousands of the most common Lycoming engines in service worldwide.
  • Precision Die-Cut: Each gasket is die-cut to the exact dimensions of the Lycoming oil screen housing, ensuring a perfect fit, proper crush, and eliminating the risk of extrusion or misalignment.

Aircraft Compatibility

The AEL61173 is the specified FAA-PMA replacement gasket for the oil pressure/suction screen housing on the majority of popular Lycoming piston engines.

  • Common Engine Series:
    • O-235
    • O-320, IO-320, LIO-320
    • O-360, IO-360, LIO-360, AIO-360, HIO-360
    • O-540, IO-540, TIO-540, LIO-540, AEIO-540
    • And many other Lycoming models.

Applications

The AEL61173 is an essential component for routine engine maintenance:

  • Oil Screen Inspection: A mandatory replacement part for whenever the oil pressure screen housing is removed to inspect the screen for contaminants, which is typically required at every oil change or 50-hour inspection.
  • Preventing Oil Leaks: The primary component responsible for sealing this critical junction in the lubrication system. A failed gasket will result in a significant external oil leak.
  • Engine Overhaul: A standard component included in all major engine gasket kits for use during reassembly.

Why Choose AEL61173?

An external oil leak, especially from a pressurized part of the lubrication system, is a significant safety-of-flight issue that can lead to an in-flight engine shutdown. The AEL61173 gasket provides a reliable, high-quality seal from trusted FAA-PMA manufacturers. Using a new, certified gasket every time the oil screen is serviced is the only way to ensure a leak-free joint. The material is specifically engineered to perform in this high-temperature, high-pressure environment without becoming brittle or extruding, providing peace of mind that a simple component won't cause a major problem.

The oil pressure screen housing is a critical access point for inspecting the health of the engine. The screen itself is designed to capture larger ferrous and non-ferrous particles, providing the first indication of an abnormal internal wear event (such as a failing bearing or spalling camshaft). Because this housing must be removed frequently for inspection, the AEL61173 gasket is designed to provide a perfect seal under repeated assembly cycles (with a new gasket each time). The rubber-fiber composite material is chosen for its ability to create a seal with a relatively low seating stress, meaning the housing doesn't need to be excessively torqued to prevent leaks. This prevents thread-stripping damage to the much more expensive engine accessory case, a common issue when incorrect or hardened gaskets are used.

Note: This is a single-use gasket. It must be replaced every time the oil screen housing is removed. Ensure both mating surfaces on the engine case and the housing are clean, dry, and free of old gasket material before installation. Tighten the housing or cap screws to the torque value specified in the current Lycoming maintenance manual or service publication.
