3888002-2 – Champion Aerospace Igniter Plug for GTCP36 APU

Available now on the Airparts.aero Marketplace.

Overview

The Champion Aerospace 3888002-2 is a high-performance, FAA-PMA approved turbine igniter plug engineered specifically for the demanding environment of the Garrett / Honeywell GTCP36 series Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). As a flight-critical component, this igniter delivers the powerful, high-energy spark required to initiate combustion in the APU, which provides essential ground power, cabin air conditioning, and main engine start capabilities. Featuring Champion's advanced ceramic insulator and robust superalloy construction, the 3888002-2 is designed for exceptional durability, reliable light-off, and a long service life.

Key Features

  • High-Energy Surface Gap Design: Utilizes a semi-conductive surface gap firing tip. This design produces a massive, high-temperature spark that is highly effective at igniting atomized jet fuel in the turbulent, high-airflow environment of the APU's combustor can.
  • High-Purity Alumina Insulator: Features a proprietary high-purity alumina ceramic insulator. This provides superior dielectric strength to prevent high-voltage flashover and has exceptional thermal conductivity and shock resistance to withstand rapid temperature changes.
  • Nickel Alloy Superstructure: The igniter shell is constructed from a high-strength nickel alloy, providing excellent resistance to the extreme temperatures and corrosive gases present in the turbine combustor section.
  • Hermetic Sealing Technology: Incorporates an advanced hermetic seal, typically a glass or glass-ceramic bond. This seal prevents the leakage of high-pressure combustion gases past the igniter, protecting the ignition lead and exciter box from damage.
  • Industry-Leading Performance: Engineered by Champion Aerospace, the world leader in aerospace ignition systems, to meet or exceed the performance and service life of the original equipment part, ensuring reliable APU starting when it is needed most.

    • Gulfstream: G100 (Astra SPX)

Applications

The 3888002-2 has a singular but absolutely critical application:

  • APU Ignition: Serves as the final component in the APU's ignition system, delivering the high-energy spark from the exciter directly into the combustor to initiate and sustain combustion during the start cycle.
  • Scheduled Maintenance Item: A consumable component that is inspected for erosion and replaced at specified service intervals to ensure continued APU starting reliability.

Why Choose 3888002-2?

The aircraft's APU is essential for ground operations and serves as a critical backup power source. A failure to start can lead to significant operational delays and costs. The Champion 3888002-2 is engineered with the material science and robust design necessary to perform reliably in the violent environment of a turbine combustor. Choosing a genuine Champion Aerospace igniter guarantees you are installing a component with a known service life, certified performance, and the advanced features required to ensure reliable APU light-off, every time.

The 3888002-2 surface-gap igniter operates on a different principle than a standard spark plug. It functions as part of a high-energy capacitor discharge ignition system. The APU's exciter box stores a powerful electrical charge (measured in Joules) in a capacitor. Upon receiving a signal to fire, the exciter releases this entire charge in a single, high-current pulse to the igniter. The voltage is high enough to flash over the semi-conductive material that separates the electrodes on the igniter's tip. This creates an intensely hot, large-kernel spark that is ideal for igniting the swirling fuel-air mixture in a turbine combustor. This design is highly resistant to carbon fouling and provides a much more energetic spark than a simple air-gap plug could produce.

Note: This is a high-voltage, flight-critical engine component. Installation and handling must be performed by a certified A&P mechanic in strict accordance with the current APU maintenance manual. The ignition system carries lethal voltages and must be fully de-energized and grounded before any maintenance is performed.
