Overview

The Teledyne Gill ST02886NY is a complete, FAA-approved Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) kit that authorizes the replacement of the original Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cad) batteries with two high-performance Gill 7641-20 sealed lead-acid batteries on ATR 42 and ATR 72 series regional transport aircraft. This comprehensive kit provides the official STC authorization, detailed engineering drawings, and all necessary, precision-engineered hardware to perform this critical battery system upgrade. By converting from maintenance-intensive Ni-Cad batteries to Gill's modern, sealed VRLA/AGM technology, this STC offers a significant improvement in operational reliability, safety, and a dramatic reduction in maintenance costs.

Key Features

  • Complete, Certified Modification Package: This is not just a single part, but a complete, turnkey STC kit containing the legal FAA authorization, installation instructions, and all required hardware to modify the aircraft in an airworthy manner.
  • Enables Modern Battery Technology: Facilitates the upgrade to two Gill 7641-20 Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) / Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries. This provides excellent starting performance, is maintenance-free (no watering), and eliminates the hazardous materials and thermal runaway risks associated with Ni-Cad batteries.
  • Custom-Engineered Battery Tray/Box: The kit includes a custom-fabricated battery box or tray assembly, designed with the precise dimensions and structural integrity to securely hold the two 7641-20 batteries in the airframe, replacing the original Ni-Cad battery container.
  • Simplified Installation: Provides all necessary brackets, fasteners, and wiring/connector assemblies to ensure a straightforward installation with minimal modification to the existing airframe structure, reducing aircraft downtime.
  • Reduced Maintenance Costs: Eliminates the expensive and time-consuming capacity checks, deep cycling, and re-watering procedures required for Ni-Cad batteries, offering a significantly lower total cost of ownership.

Applications

The ST02886NY STC kit is the all-in-one, certified solution for a major aircraft system upgrade:

  • Battery System Modernization: The primary application is to upgrade from older, maintenance-intensive, and hazardous Ni-Cad batteries to modern, high-performance sealed VRLA batteries.
  • Improving Dispatch Reliability: Sealed lead-acid batteries provide more predictable performance and are less susceptible to the sudden failures that can affect Ni-Cad batteries, improving on-time performance.
  • Enhancing Safety: Eliminates the risk of a thermal runaway event, a dangerous and well-documented hazard associated with Ni-Cad battery chemistry.

Why Choose STC Kit ST02886NY?

Changing the battery chemistry on a transport-category aircraft is a major alteration that impacts the aircraft's weight & balance, electrical load analysis, and airworthiness certification basis. The Teledyne Gill ST02886NY STC kit is the only legal and safe way to perform this upgrade. It provides all the pre-approved engineering data, certified hardware, and FAA authorization needed to successfully and legally modify the aircraft. This kit is a complete, turnkey solution from the world's leading producer of lead-acid aircraft batteries.

A Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) such as ST02886NY represents a significant engineering undertaking. Teledyne Gill must prove to the FAA that their battery system modification is at least equivalent in safety and performance to the original type-certificated design. This involves extensive testing, including structural load tests on the new battery box, electrical load analysis to ensure the aircraft's generators can properly charge the VRLA batteries, fault analysis, and the development of an Approved Flight Manual Supplement (AFMS). The AFMS provides the flight crew with the necessary operating procedures and limitations for the new system. The Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA) provides the maintenance technicians with the required inspection and service procedures. The purchase of the kit grants the airline or operator the right to use this proprietary, pre-approved data to legally perform the modification.

Note: This is a major modification and must be performed and documented by a certified A&P mechanic with Inspection Authorization (IA) or at a Part 145 repair station, in strict accordance with the STC's installation instructions. An FAA Form 337 must be completed and filed upon completion of the modification, citing STC No. ST02886NY as the approved data.
