Overview

The Alcor 86317 is a high-quality, FAA-PMA approved Type K grounded thermocouple probe, expertly engineered for the precise measurement of Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) and Turbine Inlet Temperature (TIT) in a wide range of piston and turbine aircraft engines. Manufactured by Alcor, a trusted leader in aircraft engine instrumentation for over 60 years, this probe is designed for exceptional accuracy and durability. It features a robust, adjustable clamp-on design that allows for optimal placement in the exhaust stream. The 86317 is a critical diagnostic tool that provides pilots and mechanics with the real-time data needed for precise engine leaning, troubleshooting, and overall engine health monitoring.

Key Features

  • High-Accuracy Type K Element: Utilizes a Type K thermocouple junction (Chromel-Alumel), the industry standard for EGT and TIT measurement. This junction provides a predictable and linear voltage output across a wide operational temperature range, ensuring accurate readings.
  • Grounded, Fast-Response Junction: The thermocouple junction is physically grounded to the probe's sheath. This design offers a significantly faster response time to changes in exhaust gas temperature compared to ungrounded probes, providing immediate feedback for engine management.
  • Inconel 600 Probe Sheath: The probe is sheathed in Inconel 600, a high-performance nickel-chromium superalloy. This material provides excellent resistance to the extremely high temperatures and corrosive gases found in the aircraft exhaust system, ensuring a long and reliable service life.
  • Adjustable Clamp-On Design: Features a versatile, adjustable clamp that allows the probe tip to be positioned at the ideal depth within the exhaust stack (typically 1.5 to 2 inches) for the most accurate temperature reading.
  • FAA-PMA Certified: As a certified FAA-PMA part, it has been rigorously tested to meet or exceed the performance, safety, and quality standards of the original equipment manufacturer's part, making it a fully airworthy component.

Technical Specifications

Aircraft Compatibility

The Alcor 86317 is a highly versatile probe designed for use on a vast number of both piston and turbine engines. Its universal clamp-on design makes it a standard for many aftermarket engine monitoring systems and a direct replacement for many OEM probes.

  • Engine Manufacturers:
    • Lycoming
    • Continental
    • Rolls-Royce / Allison
    • And others.
  • Common Applications:
    • Piston Aircraft: Used as an EGT probe on each cylinder's exhaust riser for precise mixture leaning ("lean-of-peak" or "rich-of-peak" operations) and diagnosing combustion issues.
    • Turboprop Aircraft: Used as a TIT probe, providing one of the most critical indications of engine operating limits.

Applications

The 86317 thermocouple is a fundamental sensor for modern engine management:

  • Mixture Leaning: Provides the data necessary to lean the fuel-air mixture accurately, leading to significant fuel savings, reduced engine deposits, and longer engine life.
  • Engine Diagnostics: Helps mechanics diagnose a wide range of engine problems, including fouled spark plugs, induction leaks, clogged fuel injectors, and magneto timing issues by analyzing temperature differentials between cylinders.
  • Engine Limitation Monitoring: In turbine engines, TIT is often the primary limiting factor for engine power output. An accurate probe is essential to prevent costly and dangerous over-temperature events.

Why Choose 86317?

Accurate EGT and TIT data is critical for both the economic operation and the long-term health of an aircraft engine. The Alcor 86317 is a robust, reliable, and FAA-PMA approved solution from a company that specializes in engine instrumentation. Its fast-response grounded junction and durable Inconel construction provide the performance and longevity required for the harsh exhaust environment. For accurate engine monitoring and diagnostics, the Alcor 86317 is a proven and trusted choice for pilots and mechanics worldwide.

The Alcor 86317 functions based on the Seebeck effect. The Type K thermocouple consists of two dissimilar conductors, Chromel (a nickel-chromium alloy) and Alumel (a nickel-aluminum alloy), joined at one end (the "hot junction"). When this junction is heated by the engine's exhaust, a small thermoelectric voltage (measured in millivolts) is generated, which is directly proportional to the temperature difference between the hot junction and the "cold junction" (typically at the instrument). The grounded design of the 86317 ensures the hot junction is in direct contact with the protective Inconel sheath, allowing for rapid thermal transfer and a much quicker response to changes in engine parameters compared to ungrounded probes where the junction is isolated.

Note: Installation must be performed by a certified A&P mechanic. The probe tip should be positioned correctly within the exhaust gas stream per the instructions of the engine or engine monitor manufacturer. Ensure the color-coded thermocouple leads are connected with the correct polarity to the instrument; reversing them will cause erroneous readings.
