MS9144-01 – Rapco Prop Governor Drive Pad Gasket
Available now on the Airparts.aero Marketplace.
Overview
The MS9144-01 is a military-standard gasket designed to provide a reliable, leak-proof seal for the propeller governor mounting pad on a wide variety of Lycoming and Continental aircraft engines. This gasket is precision-cut from a specialized rubber-cork composite material, engineered to create a positive seal between the engine accessory case and the base of the propeller governor. Manufactured by leading FAA-PMA approved companies like Rapco, the MS9144-01 ensures a perfect fit and the correct material properties needed to withstand the heat, vibration, and high-pressure oil present at this critical interface.
Key Features
- Rubber-Cork Composite Material: Fabricated from a high-grade cork and synthetic rubber (elastomer) blend. This composite material offers the ideal combination of compressibility from the cork to conform to surface irregularities and the oil and heat resistance of the rubber to prevent degradation.
- Positive High-Pressure Seal: Designed to prevent pressurized engine oil from leaking out of the governor drive pad. This is critical for maintaining engine oil levels and preventing fire hazards within the engine compartment.
- Vibration Dampening: The inherent properties of the cork-rubber material help to absorb and dampen the micro-vibrations between the engine case and the governor, reducing wear and fatigue on both components.
- MS Certified Standard: As a certified Military Standard part, the MS9144-01 guarantees precise dimensions and material composition, ensuring interchangeability and reliable performance across all applicable engine models.
- Single-Use Integrity: Engineered as a mandatory single-use component. The gasket achieves its seal through compression, and once used, it will not provide the same reliable seal if reinstalled.

Engine Compatibility
The MS9144-01 is one of the most common gaskets in aviation, used on nearly all Lycoming and Continental engines equipped with a hydraulic constant-speed propeller governor.
- Compatible Engine Manufacturers:
- Lycoming: O-320, IO-320, O-360, IO-360, O-540, IO-540, and more.
- Continental: O-470, IO-470, IO-520, IO-550, and more.
Applications
The MS9144-01 is an essential component for propeller system maintenance:
- Propeller Governor Installation: A new gasket must be used every time a propeller governor is installed or reinstalled on the engine.
- Engine Overhaul: A mandatory replacement item during any engine overhaul or when the accessory case is serviced.
- Leak Repair: The primary part used to fix an oil leak originating from the governor mounting pad.
Why Choose MS9144-01?
An oil leak from the propeller governor pad can spray oil all over the engine compartment and windscreen, leading to significant oil loss and creating a serious fire risk. The MS9144-01 gasket is a simple, inexpensive, yet flight-critical component that prevents this hazard. Using a certified part from a trusted manufacturer like Rapco ensures that the gasket material is compatible with modern aviation oils and will not become brittle or break down under the heat and pressure of normal engine operation. For a leak-free and airworthy installation, there is no substitute for a new, certified MS9144-01 gasket.

The MS9144-01 gasket seals a critical interface where high-pressure engine oil is routed from the accessory case into the propeller governor. The governor uses this oil pressure (often exceeding 200 PSI) to change the pitch of the propeller blades. The rubber-cork composite material of the gasket is designed to provide "compressibility with controlled swell." The cork allows the material to compress and fill any minor imperfections on the machined surfaces of the engine case and governor base. The rubber binder prevents the gasket from becoming fully saturated with oil and provides the necessary elasticity to maintain a seal during thermal expansion and contraction of the engine components.
Note: This is a single-use gasket. It must be replaced every time the propeller governor is removed. Ensure both the engine accessory case pad and the governor base are clean, dry, and free of old gasket material before installing a new gasket. Torque the governor mounting nuts to the value specified in the current engine maintenance or overhaul manual.
